Primary Election 2024: Final Results

The results of the March 19 Presidential Primary Election have been certified. In general, the incumbents won most of the races where they had opposition. Below are the results of a few races for which there was active campaigning:

  • US Congress 4th District: Incumbent Garcia won

  • US Congress 6th District: Incumbent Casten won

  • US Congress 7th District: Incumbent Davis won

  • Illinois Senate 20th District: Incumbent (Toro) lost to Guzman

As reported previously, in the contest for Cook County State’s Attorney, Eileen O'Neill Burke defeated Clayton Harris III in the Democratic Primary. The results were publicized on April 2 after the appropriate Vote By Mail and Provisional ballots had been included in the counts.

O'Neill Burke received 264,428 votes and Harris received 262,857. That is a difference of 1,571 votes out of a total of 527,285 or 0.3%. This is the combined total for the City of Chicago and Suburban Cook County. Harris received a plurality in the City of Chicago and O’Neill Burke received a plurality in Suburban Cook County. There are no plans for a recount at this time.

There was an unusual contest for Democratic Committeeperson for the 9th Ward. There were no candidates on the printed ballot, but there were four official write-in candidates who received 2,692 votes out of 9,152 votes cast in the ward:

  • Anthony A. Beale (Write-in): 1,324 votes (49.18%)

  • Cleopatra "Cleo" Draper (Write-in): 1,128 votes (41.90%)

  • Robert R McKay (Write-in): 3 votes (0.11%)

  • Kenny Williams (Write-in): 237 votes (8.80%)

Ms. Draper reported during public comment period to the Chicago Board of Elections at its April 9 meeting that she felt errors had been made in processing the write-in votes . After discussion and consideration of her presentation, the Board of Elections did not change the declared winner (Beale) or perform a recount but will emphasize to Board employees and Election Judges before future elections the correct procedures for reporting and tabulating write-in votes for candidates.
