Chicago Composting Win!

From the Department of Streets and Sanitation

We are excited to share that, since Chicago’s Food Scrap Drop-Off Program launched last October:

  • Over 4,200 households have signed up to participate.

  • Over 67 tons of food scraps have been composted instead of landfilled.

  • 43.8 MTCO2e of greenhouse gas emissions have been prevented as a result. That's equivalent to preventing the emissions from burning 4,928 gallons of gasoline.

  • The food scraps have been very "clean" with little contamination.

Way to go! The program is already making a difference for our environment. Please help spread the word and encourage your friends and neighbors to sign-up via the City’s Food Scrap Drop-Off Application.

In addition to the original 15 locations, there are two new locations where you can drop off your food scraps: 5853 N Broadway in Edgewater and 5600 S Central Ave in Garfield Ridge.
