LWVUS Program Planning Session
The Program Planning process is part of what makes the League a grassroots organization—each League member has the opportunity to influence the selection of issues where the League will focus time, talent, and money.
Program can be thought of as the League's issues for emphasis, or the governmental issues that we choose for concerted study, education, and action at local, state, and national levels.
All LWV Chicago members are invited to join us February 24 to make their voices heard during our Program Planning session ahead of the LWVUS Convention in June.
Please register to attend this virtual meeting via Zoom. This meeting is open only to LWV Chicago members. Materials will be sent to registrants for review.

Luncheon Book Talk with Lorissa Rinehart
The League of Women Voters of Chicago, the Jeannette Rankin Foundation, and the Union League Club of Chicago welcome acclaimed historian and author Lorissa Rinehart for a luncheon book talk that revisits one of the most consequential moral confrontations in American political history.
Rinehart will discuss her celebrated new book, Winning the Earthquake: How Jeannette Rankin Defied All Odds to Become the First Woman in Congress, the first authoritative biography of Jeannette Rankin—a suffragist, legislator, and reformer who entered Congress before women nationwide could vote and reshaped the meaning of political courage.
Rankin’s story is not one of easy triumph. It is the story of a woman who challenged entrenched power, advanced constitutional suffrage, defended workers and families, and voted her conscience when isolation became the cost of integrity. Rinehart brings this history to life with narrative force and scholarly clarity, revealing how Rankin’s resolve altered the trajectory of American democracy and expanded the boundaries of who could govern.
Praised by Publishers Weekly, The Wall Street Journal, Library Journal, and leading historians, Winning the Earthquake has been recognized as a gripping and illuminating account of leadership under pressure—an exploration of what it means to stand firm when consensus collapses.
This luncheon program invites members and guests to reflect on conviction, representation, and the enduring demands of self-government. Join us for a compelling conversation that connects past courage to present responsibility—and reminds us why history still matters.
Cost: $46.11 (includes tax and gratuity) | Attire: Smart Casual
Space is limited. Advance registration is required.

Exploring the Constitution & the News
Join us for a virtual series that explores the U.S. Constitution through both its historical foundations and its ongoing relevance in today’s headlines. Each session, held the third Thursday evening of each month at 7:00 pm, will take a deeper look at how the framers’ debates, amendments, and landmark interpretations continue to shape the issues we see in the news—from voting rights and separation of powers to free speech, federalism, and more.
Designed for adults seeking a clearer understanding of how our government works, this series blends accessible history with thoughtful discussion of current events. Participants will gain practical civic knowledge, learn how constitutional principles apply to modern challenges, and leave better equipped to evaluate news and public policy.
Whether you're a longtime civic learner or just beginning to dig into constitutional questions, these programs will offer an engaging, nonpartisan space to explore how America’s founding document continues to guide—and sometimes complicate—our democracy today.
The programs will be presented by Steven D. Schwinn, who teaches constitutional law at UIC Law School. Steve is founding editor-in-chief of the American Constitution Society Supreme Court Review and founding co-editor of the Constitutional Law Prof Blog. He is a longtime member of the American Constitution Society Chicago Lawyers Chapter Board of Advisers.
This series is sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Wheaton.
Confronting the Next Great Suffrage Battle
One of the most important, yet little-known, initiatives of the mid-20th-century civil rights movement were "Citizenship Schools,” a literacy and civics education program that trained and mobilized hundreds of thousands of Black citizens in the Jim Crow South to understand their Constitutional rights and demand the right to vote.
Join the League of Women Voters of Chicago to hear noted author and speaker Elaine Weiss discuss this audacious experiment in civic education and leadership training.
This event is free and open to the public. Registration is required; seating is limited.
About the Speaker
Elaine Weiss is an award-winning author and journalist who holds a graduate degree from Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism.
Her first book on the women's suffrage movement, The Woman's Hour: The Great Fight to Win the Vote was a GoodReads Readers' Choice Award winner, short-listed for the 2019 Chautauqua Prize, and received the American Bar Association's highest honor, the Silver Gavel Award.
Her newest book, Spell Freedom: The Underground Schools that Built the Civil Rights Movement, has won high praise from scholars and readers alike. It has been long-listed by the American Library Association for the Carnegie Medal for Excellence and was selected by Amazon's editors as one of the best history books of 2025.
Weiss resides in Baltimore, and is a member of the League of Women Voters of Baltimore City.
This event is part of our Chicago in Focus lecture series, which seeks to highlight and explore the most important issues facing Chicagoans today.
