Chicago Ranked Choice Voting Lobby Day
During the week of January 23 (Ranked Choice Voting Day!), FairVote Illinois and its partner organizations will be lobbying the mayor and all 50 alders in Chicago's City Council to speak to them about why ranked choice voting is a great reform for Chicago's elections.

Constituents are encouraged to set up meetings on January 23, or between January 20–22 if January 23 isn't available.
FairVote Illinois plans to hold Lobby Day training sessions the week of January 13. All participants will be provided with talking points prior to the meeting.

Chicago in Focus | Dr. Larry McClellan and the Underground Railroad
Freedom Seekers and the Underground Railroad in Chicago and Northeastern Illinois
Join us to hear from Dr. Larry McClellan, historian and author, who will discuss the history of freedom seekers and the Underground Railroad in Illinois.
We’ll gather at the University of Chicago’s Regenstein Library (Room 122). The event will also be available virtually. It is free to attend and open to the public.
Dr. McClellan’s award award-winning book, Onward to Chicago: Freedom Seekers and the Underground Railroad in Northeastern Illinois (Carbondale: Southern Illinois University Press, 2023), will be available for sale at the event.

About the Speaker
After graduate work at the University of Chicago, Dr. Larry McClellan helped create Governors State University south of Chicago in 1970 and served with the University for 30 years. He is Emeritus Professor of Sociology and Community Studies. In the mid-70s, he was mayor of University Park (then Park Forest South). He spent four years as a senior consultant with the Northeastern Illinois Planning Commission, and throughout his career, served as pastor with diverse congregations.
His consulting, research and writing focus on freedom seekers and the Underground Railroad, and on African American and regional history south of Chicago. Major publications include 25 articles in the Encyclopedia of Chicago [2005]; The Underground Railroad South of Chicago [2019], co-author of To the River, The RemarkableJourney of Caroline Quarlls, a Freedom Seeker on the Underground Railroad [2019]. Onward to Chicago: Freedom Seekers and the Underground Railroad in Northeastern Illinois was published by Southern Illinois University Press in 2023. This received the national 2023 Memorial Prize for the Advancement of Knowledge from the Underground Railroad Free Press. In 2022 he received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Illinois State Historical Society for his contributions to Illinois history and, in 2024, they gave his latest book their Award for Superior Achievement.
Larry has spoken at five Illinois state history conferences and three national conferences of the National Park Service Network to Freedom program. He was the principal researcher for listings on the NPS Network to Freedom national register of Underground Railroad sites in Crete, Lockport, and Chicago. Some of his work will be found at illinoisundergroundrailroad.info.
For ten years, he wrote a monthly regional history column for The Southtown/Star newspapers. Larry graduated from Occidental College in Los Angeles, with a year at the University of Ghana in West Africa, and additional studies in Great Britain and Jerusalem. He has served on the boards of the Illinois State Historical Society and the Will County Historical Society and has given lectures and programs across Illinois. Currently he is President of the Little Calumet River Underground Railroad Project and serves on the Illinois Underground Railroad Task Force.

She has a passion for nonpartisan systemic reforms and currently resides in Willowbrook.

Exploring the Idea of a Mississippi River Compact
The idea or a Mississippi River Compact has been rumbling up and down the river for years without getting a real toe-hold. A Mississippi River Compact would be a legal agreement between all ten mainstem Mississippi River states and the Federal Government. If enacted, a Compact could provide a forum for management over the entire watershed comprehensively using the sovereign powers of both state and federal governments.

Fair Elections South Side Town Hall
Join Alderman Matt Martin and grassroots organizations for a town hall about the Chicago Fair Elections Ordinance, a small dollar matching program that aims to increase participation in local elections and empower people from all walks of life to run for elected office.
Chicago is currently the largest US city without publicly financed elections. This town hall is an opportunity to learn about the ordinance and discuss what Fair Elections would mean for you and your community.

No ID is required to vote in your home precinct on Election Day unless you are voting for the first time and have registered by mail without verification.
Democracy Book Club with Ari Berman
The Electoral College Committee of the League of Women Voters of Deerfield/Lincolnshire is delighted to welcome journalist Ari Berman.
Mr. Berman will speak about his new book Minority Rule: The Right-Wing Attack on the Will of the People—and the Fight to Resist It. Attendees are encouraged to read the book ahead of the meeting so we can follow Berman's remarks with discussion and make the meeting a a "democracy book club."
About the Speaker
Ari Berman is the national voting rights correspondent for Mother Jones and a reporting fellow at Type Media Center. He’s the author of the new book Minority Rule: The Right-Wing Attack on the Will of the People—and the Fight to Resist It, published in April by Farrar, Straus, and Giroux, as well as Give Us the Ballot: The Modern Struggle for Voting Rights in America (finalist, National Book Critics Circle Award for nonfiction) and Herding Donkeys: The Fight to Rebuild the Democratic Party and Reshape American Politics. His writing has also appeared in The New York Times, the Washington Post and The Atlantic, and he is a frequent commentator on MSNBC and NPR. He's won the Sidney Hillman Foundation Prize for Magazine Journalism and an Izzy Award for outstanding achievement in independent media. He lives in New Paltz, New York.

Truth, Disinformation and the Media in the 2024 Election
In this presentation, award-winning journalist and media executive Eric Schurenberg explores the current news and election landscape. You’ll come away with an understanding of how social media and digital economics shape today's information environment, how partisan actors exploit our all-too-human vulnerability to misinformation, and how those economic and psychological forces have shaped the coverage of this Presidential campaign.
The goal: To help you think critically, despite the heightened passion and noise, about the decision you'll make on November 5.
This program is part of a League event series where noted authorities speak on relevant topics leading up to the U.S. Presidential Election on Tuesday, November 5. Presented by LWVIL’s Misinformation and Disinformation Task Force, the series is part of an effort to provide tools and resources that educate voters.
About the Speaker
Eric Schurenberg is the founder of the Alliance for Trust in Media, a non-profit organization dedicated to fostering trust between journalists and their audiences. The Alliance partners with newsrooms across the country to research strategies that help build audience trust and shares its findings at live events and through its website. It also promotes media literacy in the workplace and hosts the podcast In Reality, which focuses on truth, disinformation, and the media.
Before founding the Alliance, Eric served as CEO of Mansueto Ventures, home to Inc. and Fast Company, where he led the company to its first year of profitability. Prior to that, he was president and editor-in-chief of Inc., founding editor at CBS MoneyWatch.com, and held several leadership roles in business journalism, earning numerous accolades including a Loeb Award and a National Magazine Award.
In addition to his work at the Alliance, Eric is editor-in-chief and board member of Amplify Publishing Group. He also serves as a strategic adviser to the University of Chicago’s Leadership and Society Initiative and is a senior fellow at the US Chamber of Commerce.
Earlier in his career, Eric spent six years as an actor, often typecast as a Cockney juvenile delinquent—despite being from Ohio.
Outside of work, Eric is a private pilot and a competitive club tennis player.

Voting Machine Demonstration
A representative of the Chicago Board of Elections will demonstrate how a voting machine works at Legler Regional Library.
