A Luncheon Conversation with Senator Carol Moseley Braun & Author Lorissa Rinehart

The League of Women Voters of Chicago, the Jeannette Rankin Foundation, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc - Chicago Alumni Chapter, the National Council of Jewish Women Chicago North Shore, Chicago Women’s History Center, and the Union League Club of Chicago welcome former Ambassador and United States Senator from Illinois Carol Moseley Braun and women’s historian Lorissa Rinehart for a timely discussion about the enduring power of women’s leadership in American democracy.

As Shirley Chisholm said, women have always had to bring their own chairs when claiming a seat in the United States government. Tracing two groundbreaking women’s extraordinary journeys from uniquely American roots to the halls of power, Moseley Braun’s recent memoir, Trailblazer: Perseverance in Life and Politics, and Rinehart’s new biography of Jeannette Rankin, Winning the Earthquake: How Jeannette Rankin Defied All Odds to Become America’s First Congresswoman,  reveal just how true this has been throughout our country’s history.

In Trailblazer, Senator Moseley Braun reflects on her historic 1992 election as the first Black woman ever elected to the U.S. Senate, offering an intimate account of perseverance, public service, and the realities of breaking racial and gender barriers in American politics. In Winning the Earthquake, Rinehart tells the gripping story of Rankin’s 1916 campaign for Congress, an audacious victory that reshaped who could hold office and evolved the nation’s understanding of democratic participation.

More urgently, both books illuminate the capacity of women’s leadership to expand the possibilities of American democracy for all. Rankin’s historic run for Congress and Moseley Braun’s groundbreaking Senate campaign were not merely personal firsts, but watershed moments that redefined who could participate in government and broadened the meaning of “We the People.”

Together, Moseley Braun and Rinehart will explore how the wisdom earned in defeat and the courage forged in victory by those who came before can help guide the next generation of women leaders carrying the torch of American democracy toward a more perfect union.

Program can be thought of as the League's issues for emphasis, or the governmental issues that we choose for concerted study, education, and action at local, state, and national levels.

All LWV Chicago members are invited to join us to make their voices heard during our Program Planning session ahead of the LWVUS Convention in June.

Please register to attend this virtual meeting via Zoom. This meeting is open only to LWV Chicago members. Materials will be sent to registrants for review.

Exploring the Constitution & the News

Join us for a virtual series that explores the U.S. Constitution through both its historical foundations and its ongoing relevance in today’s headlines. Each session, held the third Thursday evening of each month at 7:00 pm, will take a deeper look at how the framers’ debates, amendments, and landmark interpretations continue to shape the issues we see in the news—from voting rights and separation of powers to free speech, federalism, and more.

Register to attend

Designed for adults seeking a clearer understanding of how our government works, this series blends accessible history with thoughtful discussion of current events. Participants will gain practical civic knowledge, learn how constitutional principles apply to modern challenges, and leave better equipped to evaluate news and public policy.

Whether you're a longtime civic learner or just beginning to dig into constitutional questions, these programs will offer an engaging, nonpartisan space to explore how America’s founding document continues to guide—and sometimes complicate—our democracy today.

The programs will be presented by Steven D. Schwinn, who teaches constitutional law at UIC Law School. Steve is founding editor-in-chief of the American Constitution Society Supreme Court Review and founding co-editor of the Constitutional Law Prof Blog. He is a longtime member of the American Constitution Society Chicago Lawyers Chapter Board of Advisers.

This series is sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Wheaton.

Confronting the Next Great Suffrage Battle

One of the most important, yet little-known, initiatives of the mid-20th-century civil rights movement were "Citizenship Schools,” a literacy and civics education program that trained and mobilized hundreds of thousands of Black citizens in the Jim Crow South to understand their Constitutional rights and demand the right to vote.

Join the League of Women Voters of Chicago to hear noted author and speaker Elaine Weiss discuss this audacious experiment in civic education and leadership training.

This event is free and open to the public. Registration is required; seating is limited.

About the Speaker

Elaine Weiss is an award-winning author and journalist who holds a graduate degree from Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism.

Her first book on the women's suffrage movement, The Woman's Hour: The Great Fight to Win the Vote was a GoodReads Readers' Choice Award winner, short-listed for the 2019 Chautauqua Prize, and received the American Bar Association's highest honor, the Silver Gavel Award.

Her newest book, Spell Freedom: The Underground Schools that Built the Civil Rights Movement, has won high praise from scholars and readers alike. It has been long-listed by the American Library Association for the Carnegie Medal for Excellence and was selected by Amazon's editors as one of the best history books of 2025.

Weiss resides in Baltimore, and is a member of the League of Women Voters of Baltimore City.
