All LWV Chicago members are invited to our Annual Meeting on Saturday, June 28! We’ll meet to vote on the members who will lead the organization, the budget for the next year, and changes to our org's bylaws.
Joining us as keynote speaker is Alderman Daniel La Spata of the 1st Ward, who will discuss the city's evolving response to gender-based violence, the importance of sustained funding, and the collective actions needed to foster a safer, more equitable community.
Members can join us virtually or in person.
Keynote Speaker Alderman Daniel La Spata
Ald. La Spata is taking bold action to tackle a growing threat that too often stays in the shadows. While Chicago officials cautiously celebrate a drop in overall crime this year, they’re also sounding the alarm as domestic violence crimes spike. With domestic-related homicides and assaults rising in 2025 and federal funding for survivor support set to expire, Ald. La Spata has called for a City Council hearing to confront the crisis of gender-based violence (GBV) head-on, determined to ensure Chicago is safe for everyone.
First elected to serve the 1st Ward in 2019, Ald. La Spata has a track record of turning concern into action. During the pandemic, he helped triple the City’s investment in domestic and GBV services—an historic boost to Chicago’s efforts to address a deepening crisis. With millions in anti-violence funds slow to reach frontline organizations, La Spata has pushed city officials to get the dollars out the door, insisting, “We have the money to do it, so let’s do it”. Now, he is rallying colleagues, experts, and community advocates to develop solutions and secure future funding. This energetic push reflects core League values of community safety, accountability, and proactive leadership—things that matter to all of us, and which stand above partisan politics.
