Gearing Up for the February Municipal Election

Candidates have filed petitions to be placed on the ballot in the February 28 Municipal Election, and the period for filing objections to the petitions ended Monday, December 5.

Eleven candidates have filed to run for the office of mayor. Only one has applied to run for clerk and one for city treasurer. Alderpersons: There are 208 candidates for alderperson in 50 wards and 199 candidates for police district counselor in 22 districts. See how many candidates have filed to run in your ward and police district.

Members of the City Council have proposed three referenda for the ballot, including a measure regarding approval of the agreement with Commonwealth Edison, a ban on the manufacture and sale of assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, and a declaration that local, state, and federal governments should view homelessness as a public health crisis and work together to address chronic homelessness. The deadline for submitting referenda is December 12.

After hearings, the ballot is scheduled to be certified on December 22.

You can now apply to vote by mail in the Municipal Election. The deadline to apply is February 23.

New on the Ballot This Time

In addition to three citywide offices—mayor, clerk, and city treasurer—and an alderperson for each ward, three individuals will be elected to serve on each of the 22 new District Police Councils.
