2025/2026 Program Plans from LWV Chicago’s Advocacy Committees

City Government

The City Government Committee (CGC) will continue to follow the City Council and its committees. The CGC continues to follow efforts to ensure transparency so that Chicago residents have adequate knowledge of proposed Council actions and sufficient notice of proposed actions to allow residents to advocate. In following Council committees, the CGC will refer items of possible interest to other LWV Chicago committees and the Board. The CGC will continue to maintain and update, as appropriate, the Chicago government webpages on the Chicago League's site.

Community Oversight of Public Safety

Exploring the national effort of local law enforcement agencies in other parts of the country  to violently crack down on protests and how the Chicago Police Department can continue to support lawful protests as they did at the DNC last summer.

We will also review a report from the City of Chicago Office of Inspector General that was released on Wednesday, April 2 “Public Safety 2025 Outlook on Police Oversight and Accountability”  that addresses key issues like the effectiveness of community policing and how to ensure that the police department remains in compliance with the Welcoming Cities Ordinance that prohibits them from participating in federal immigration enforcement.
