Local School Council Elections

Local School Council (LSC) elections will be held in April this year. It is time to familiarize yourself with your local school, learn about those who are running for the council, and then plan to vote.

Quick recap—every Chicago Public school has their own LSC, which is comprised of:

  • 6 parent representatives

  • 2 community representatives

  • 2 teacher representatives

  • 1 non-teacher staff member

  • 1 high school student representative

Each LSC is given the authority to:

  • Select and evaluate the performance of the principal

  • Approve an annual school improvement plan

  • Help develop and approve a school budget with major control over an average of $500,000 per year in flexible funds

These are important and powerful organizations for each school, yet there is a critical lack of awareness and participation in LSCs.

If you are a parent or a community member, you can be nominated to be a member of the local school council. You can even nominate yourself. Learn more.
