Mayor Johnson Releases 2024 Budget Proposal

Mayor Brandon Johnson’s first budget proposal was released last week, totaling about $16.6 billion in appropriations and covering 36,729 full-time positions and equivalents. There is no increase in property taxes.

The Office of Budget and Management has published budget documents and resources for the public. Departmental hearings in front of Chicago’s City Council are underway.

BGA Policy will provide detailed daily analyses of the Mayor’s proposed budget for each city department, as well as the non-departmental Finance General category, all viewable on their budget snapshots landing page.

The Chicago League’s Environmental Action Committee is cheering a proposed $1.8 million in funding for a restored Department of Environment (DOE), $53 million to aid Lead Service Line Replacement of child daycare facilities in Black and Latinx communities, and $25 million for climate initiatives. Since the city dissolved its DOE under former Mayor Emanuel, it has experienced poor recycling rates, a lack of timely lead service line replacement and dwindling environmental enforcement.
