Styrofoam Ban Passes Out of Committee

Your action worked!

LWV Chicago’s Environmental Action Committee thanks you for supporting our action alerts on HB 3067, the bill to ban disposable food containers made of polystyrene foam in Illinois.

HB 3067 has passed an important first step in the Illinois General Assembly. The Illinois House of Representatives’ Energy and Environment Committee voted sixteen to nine to move the legislation from committee to the full House for consideration.

This is an early step in the legislative process that requires the bill to be heard on the House floor for all representatives to vote on it, possibly next year. A corresponding bill in the Illinois Senate (SB 1973) is pending in the Tourism and Hospitality Committee but has yet to be heard.

We will keep you posted on any subsequent actions needed to support this important legislation!

Leaguers Debby Halpern, Claudia Jackson, Jordan Parker and Julie Moller serve on the Coalition for Plastic Reduction (CPR), which is advocating for the ban along with other prominent environmental groups such as Friends of the Chicago River, Illinois Environmental Council, Environment Illinois, and Organizing for Plastic Reduction.
