Foam Ban Passes in Illinois

We did it! It passed! SB0058, which bans the purchasing and distribution of polystyrene foam foodware in all state facilities and agencies, passed in the Illinois House and Senate last week. After Governor Pritzker signs it, the new law will go into effect on January 1, 2025 for state agencies and January 1, 2026 for vendors.

Affected state facilities include state universities, prisons, nursing homes, the state fair, the state capitol and more. Illinois is starting with its own house to move forward in the fight to ban single-use polystyrene foam.

This could not have happened without the grassroots energy and dedication of Leaguers and advocates across the state over the last few years. A great big THANK YOU to all who participated—advocacy does work!

The fight is not over. The work will continue to get polystyrene foam foodware banned at restaurants and retail across the state.

But for now….we celebrate!
