Compost For Free!

Drumroll please…the City of Chicago now offers free composting! Composting is when food scraps are collected to turn them into fertile soil—rescuing us from the powerful greenhouse gas, methane, that food emits when it wastes away in landfills. Methane is estimated to be 28x stronger than carbon dioxide, but its lifespan is shorter, meaning that eliminating methane emissions is one of the fastest, highest-impact things we can do to fight climate change.

Composting is easy: it’s similar to having a second trash can dedicated specifically to food. Under Chicago’s new program, you can sign up for one of 15 drop-off locations to drop off your compost when the container gets full.
