Runoff Election Results

All information below is current as of Monday, April 11. Changes will occur as remaining vote by mail (VBM) ballots are counted. There are almost 35,000 VBM ballots that were requested but not returned. Election results will be certified on April 18. 

Turnout (610 thousand voters) for the April 4 Municipal Runoff Election was 38.4%. This is more than the 33.1% turnout for the runoff in 2019. Historical note: In the 1983 runoff election (Harold Washington (D), Bernard Epton (R)), the turnout was 82%.

Brandon Johnson was elected mayor, receiving 52% of the votes. Six incumbent alderpersons were reelected in the runoff. Three of those had been appointed by Mayor Lightfoot.

The mayor, city clerk, city treasurer and alderpersons will begin their terms May 15. The new City Council will have thirteen new alderpersons. They will represent the 4th, 5th, 6th, 10th, 12th, 14th, 21st, 26th, 30th, 34th, 44th, 46th, and 48th wards.

LWV Chicago participated in six candidate forums before the runoff election and seventeen forums before the February election.
