Municipal Election 2023 Updates

The Chicago Board of Elections is scheduled to meet on March 16 to certify the election results. As of March 14, Vote By Mail and provisional ballots were still being counted. The results will determine the winners to be certified by the Board. View the unofficial results.

Overall Turnout

As noted last week, the turnout for the election was 35.8%. This is similar to turnouts for February Municipal Elections since 2015. Incumbent alderpersons were reelected in 32 wards. New alderpersons were elected in 4 wards: 14, 26, 34, and 44.

There may be runoff elections for alderpersons fourteen wards. Four of these races include incumbents: 4, 5, 6, 10, 11*, 21, 24, 29*, 30, 36*, 43, 45*, 46, and 48 (*indicates that the incumbent is in the runoff). Check out our quick summary of aldermanic race results.

Important Runoff Dates

March 19: Last day for online voter registration (in-person registration is available through Election Day)

March 20: Early Voting & Registration opens in all 50 wards, as well as at downtown Supersite and Board offices 

March 30: Last day to apply for Vote By Mail ballot

April 4: Election Day (6 am–7 pm)

We’re once again teaming up with the League of Voters of Illinois, ABC7, and Univision for a mayoral candidate debate!

This debate between the last two candidates standing in the Chicago mayoral race in the April 4 runoff election, Brandon Johnson and Paul Vallas, will be moderated by ABC7 Eyewitness News anchors Judy Hsu and Ravi Baichwal, along with ABC7 political reporter Craig Wall and Univision Chicago anchor Enrique Rodriguez.

The debate will air live Thursday, March 16 at 7 pm at abc7chicago.com, as well as on ABC7’s YouTube channel and Facebook page. The debate will also air on ABC7’s main channel on Friday, March 17 at 10:35 pm as well as Sunday, March 19 at 4 pm.

Univision will simultaneously translate and air the debate live on their digital platforms and will broadcast it on Univision TV on a later date.
