Election Law Updates
On June 17, Governor Pritzker signed the elections omnibus bill (SB825) passed by the General Assembly in May. Many of the provisions in this bill were in effect for the November 2020 Election, but there were also some additional items. The bill includes the following:
Changes the date for the Primary Election to June 28, 2022 so that 2020 Census data can be used to redraw the U.S. Congressional districts. The new date for the Primary Election means that candidates for office may begin circulating nominating petitions on January 13 and file them between March 7 and March 14.
Makes Election Day, November 8, 2022 an Illinois Holiday; schools will be closed.
Requires that there be Voting Centers on Election Day so that voters are not required to vote in their home precincts.
Establishes a permanent Vote By Mail (VBM) roster. This roster will be subject to revision after the annual voter canvass, conducted in August, and reports related to voter moves out of state and deaths. Those on the list must continue to be voters in good standing.
Changes the titles of elected officials to “….person” from “….man.”
Provides for curbside voting and other items related to compliance with ADA regulations.
Details the types of actions election jurisdictions are required to take to address cybersecurity.
Establishes a polling place in jails for detainees.
