General Iron’s Move to the Southeast Side: Not a Done Deal

At the end of December, Chicago Department of Public Health officials rejected a plan that would allow Reserve Management Group to move and expand its General Iron metal recycling plant on the East Side. The letter cited 36 “deficiencies” in RMG’s application for an operating permit to move General Iron recycling equipment and employees to 11600 S. Burley Ave. City officials asked for “an entirely new application.”

Some of the deficiencies cited by CDPH involved the company’s plan to prevent explosions and protect against storm water pollution. Read the full letter.

Without addressing all 36 “deficiencies,” General Iron’s application will not meet rules for large recycling facilities that were established in response to neighbors’ overwhelming disapproval of RMG’s plans.

Public comments on RMG’s application are still being accepted at envcomments@cityofchicago.org. The deadline for public comment is January 14. Comments also may be posted via the Illinois Chapter of the Sierra Club.
