Statement from LWV Chicago President Jane Ruby on the Passing of Rev. Jesse Jackson Sr.
The League of Women Voters of Chicago mourns the profound loss of Reverend Jesse Jackson Sr., a towering force in the struggle for justice, equality and democracy. Rev. Jackson devoted his life to lifting up the voices of the marginalized and protecting the sacred right to vote.
The League has stood beside Rainbow PUSH in the fight to empower disenfranchised communities. Together, we’ve marched, registered voters, held forums and worked to shape a vision of democracy rooted in equity and inclusion. Now, more than ever, we must carry Rev. Jackson’s torch forward.
His life compels us to act, not merely to remember. The Illinois General Assembly must honor his legacy by passing the Rev. Jesse Jackson Sr. Voting Rights Act (HB4339/SB1786), a bold and necessary step to protect and expand voting rights for all.
We want to extend to Reverend Jackson's family, the Rainbow PUSH Coalition family, his friends and colleagues our sincerest condolences, and we stand in solidarity to keep hope alive.
Let us rise in faith and unity. For Rev. Jackson, for democracy, for each other.
Our time has come. Suffering breeds character. Character breeds faith. In the end, faith will not disappoint.
Our time has come. Our faith, hope, and dreams will prevail.
Our time has come. Weeping has endured for nights, but now joy cometh in the morning.
Our time has come. No grave can hold our body down.
Our time has come. No lie can live forever.
Our time has come. We must leave racial battle ground and come to economic common ground and moral higher ground.
America, our time has come. We come from disgrace to amazing grace.
– Rev. Jesse L. Jackson Sr.
