Running for School Board

Chicagoans will elect ten members of the new Chicago Elected School Board at the November 5 General Election. School Board members will serve two-year terms. The city is divided into ten School Board districts (you can look up your district online).

Petitions for nomination are circulating now—candidates need 1,000 to 3,000 signatures of registered voters in their district. Candidates can file nominating petitions with the Chicago Board of Elections from June 17 through June 24. Objections to nominations can be filed from June 17 through July 1. The last day for write-in candidates to file a Declaration of Intent is September 5.

To serve as a School Board member, you must:

  • Be a U.S. citizen

  • Be a registered voter

  • Be at least 18 years old

  • Be a resident of the city, district, or subdistrict for at least one year immediately before election or appointment

  • Not be a registered sex offender

  • Not be a contractor or vendor working with the district
