Let's Ban the Worst Single-Use Plastic in Illinois
Tired of Styrofoam® on the takeout menu? We’re fighting to pass Illinois legislation that would impose a ban on single-use polystyrene foam foodware in Illinois.
The Polystyrene Foam Foodware Ban (SB1531) passed out of the Illinois House Energy and Environment Committee this week and is potentially up for a vote on the House floor next week. This is the last step to passage of this very important bill.
We urgently need you to email your Illinois House Representative and ask them to vote YES for SB1531. Then please follow up with a phone call to your representative's Springfield office. Most likely you will speak with one of the staffers in the office; tell them that you are asking for your representative's YES vote on SB1531.
Look up your representative’s email address and Springfield phone number here (just type in your address then click on the black circle icon to access your rep’s information). Use this factsheet for talking points (and attach it to your email).
Plastic pollution is a threat to the health of Illinoisans and our environment. Polystyrene foam cups, take-out containers and other foodware are among the worst and most unnecessary sources of single-use plastic waste. Foam pieces are the third top litter item collected at beach cleanups in the Great Lakes. Illinois should say farewell to foam foodware.
