LWVUS National Convention

LWV Chicago members joined Leaguers from across the country at LWVUS' National Convention in Washington DC from June 27–30.

Lobby Day

On June 27, our six delegates toured the Capitol to meet with Illinois legislators about the ERA, SCOTUS, reproductive rights, the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, and more.

Our delegates participated in meetings with Senator Duckworth's and Senator Durbin's staff, a meeting with staff from Congressman Danny Davis's office (IL 07), and met with Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky (IL 09) and Congressman Jonathan Jackson (IL 01).

Congressman Jackson also took our delegates to the House Chambers to observe the Congressional Voting. There, we also ran into other Illinois legislators, including Congresswoman Robin Kelly (IL 02), Congressman Chuy Garcia (IL 04), Congressman Sean Casten (IL 06), Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi (IL 08), among others.

Two of our delegates later met with Congressman Jackson and Marshall "Major" Taylor's great-granddaughter. Congressman Jackson is working on awarding Marshall "Major" Taylor the Congressional Gold Medal. PBS has a documentary on Major Taylor, and he truly deserves this prestigious award.

It was truly a once in a lifetime Lobby Day experience, and we look forward to continued collaborations.

New LWVUS Leadership

During Convention, League membership elected a new national board of directors that will serve through June 2026, including LWVUS Board President Dianna Wynn.

"I am honored to serve as the new president of the League of Women Voters to advance our mission of defending democracy and to ensure that everyone’s voting rights are protected," said Wynn. Watch her remarks at Convention.

"It was wonderful to get a chance to talk with Dianna, and I look forward to working with her during her time as president," said LWV Chicago President Jane Ruby.

CEDAW Resolution

LWV Chicago President Jane Ruby spoke at a Convention workshop on the Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), an international treaty concerning the rights of women and girls. View the presentation slides.

LWV Chicago sponsored a resolution in support of CEDAW at Convention. With the help of the LWVUS Resolutions Committee and many other Leagues across the nation, the resolution passed with 99% support from the Convention Delegates, committing LWVUS’ continuing support for the CEDAW framework at the local, state, and national levels.
