Happy Earth Month!

What the heck does Earth Month even mean? Shouldn’t every month, every day for that matter, be dedicated to caring for our one and only planet?

It’s kind of like Plastic Free July. Should we only limit our use of toxic single-use plastic in July?

Well, this April, the Environmental Action Committee, in partnership with the Coalition for Plastic Reduction, is working hard to eliminate plastic, how’s that for messing up the system? You have probably seen numerous requests fill out Action Alerts and Witness Slips and we want you to know…IT WORKED!

Both the Polystyrene Foam Foodware Ban (SB1531) and the Plastic Bag Ban (SB1872) passed out of committee on March 20 and will be up for a vote in the full Senate between today and April 14. A BIG THANK YOU to everyone who responded to the Action Alerts and witness slips requests!

But we’re not done. The bills still need to pass on the Senate floor, and then they move to the House, where we do the whole process over again.

So please help us eliminate the worst of the worst single-use plastic in the State of Illinois and fill out the below Action Alerts; your state senator will receive the alert as soon as you hit send:

And if you want to do more, send your state senator an email today asking them to co-sponsor and vote yes for these bills. That's all you need to say!

The EAC thanks you from the bottom of our green little hearts!

Join the Environmental Action Committee as we work to justly affect climate change with the ultimate goal of preserving democracy by maintaining the health of our one and only planet and all that lives on it. Email us at environment@lwvchicago.org for access to our next meeting.
