Feed People, Animals and Soils—Not Landfills!
Hunger Action Month is a national campaign held every September to raise awareness and inspire action to end hunger in America. This is a great opportunity to remind each other of how ending food waste can build food security right here in Chicago.
I work and volunteer to build a more resilient, local food system both night and day (some of my best ideas or reminders come in the middle of the night). I believe in our collective power to strengthen Illinois and build connections across the entire food chain. People are hungry. Farmers are looking for resources. Illinois soils are depleted.
So, what does action on hunger look like for you?

Federal changes to food assistance programs are putting pressure on our communities. Send a message to your representatives about cuts to critical programs like SNAP and WIC.
Urgent action needed! Quick Click.
PREVENT
Meal planning, proper storage, understanding food labels and mindful shopping habits are all keys to preventing food waste. Put a note on your kitchen cabinet or refrigerator to remind you that we are living in a time where 1 in 5 Illinoisans are expected to lose their SNAP benefits. We need to be mindful and Save the Food!
RESCUE
Our own households and restaurants are the largest generators of food waste. Let’s expand food rescue efforts to bring more surplus food to communities. Check out the work of organizations like Chicago Food Rescue, Chicagoland Food Sovereignty Coalition, The Love Fridge Chicago and mutual aid organizations where you live. Share widely. Food recovery also combats climate change.
RECYCLE
A grassroots movement, Feed and Conserve Illinois, aims to address the EPA’s Wasted Food Scale. This important legislation will responsibly prioritize edible food for humans first, then animals, and finally our soils (creating an end market and infrastructure for COMPOST—aka “black gold”).
