Autumn in the Outdoors: Volunteer for Nature

Summer is waning, but if you yearn to learn about nature, meet friendly people, and make a difference, this is the perfect time of year to volunteer outdoors in nature. Below are some organizations offering volunteer opportunities to help nature thrive.

Forest Preserves of Cook County: More than 70,000 acres of woodlands, prairies and wetlands provide year-round volunteer opportunities, ranging from gathering seeds from native plants, removing harmful invasives, litter cleanup, and trail watch, to community science, nature ambassadors and more. Accumulated hours lead to benefits, including training opportunities. Learn more, or check out Friends of the Forest Preserves for even more opportunities.

Chicago Park District: Community Stewardship Program, a joint initiative with The Nature Conservancy, connects Chicagoans to Park District natural areas. Stewardship days at 36 sites across the city focus on weedy plant removal, native planting, litter pick-up, community science and education, and community-building. Learn more.

Friends of the Chicago River: Nonprofit volunteer opportunities on the Chicago/Calumet Waterways, from litter cleanup and canoe guide to wildlife monitoring and more. Learn more.

FAQ

Some general guidance (see websites for each organization for specific information and reach out to them with questions).

Do I need expertise, or equipment? Usually no. Typically, everything you need is provided. Events start with introductions and training, often overseen by experienced Volunteer Stewards. Check online or with the group lead for any special prerequisites. Beginners welcome! If you are not up to more physical activities, opportunities will sometimes include sedentary work such as seed sorting, and often groups need someone to bring snacks or do administrative tasks.

Can kids participate? Often yes, if they are accompanied by a parent/guardian, meet age requirements, and appropriate waivers are signed. Great way to introduce nature to young people.

Can I bring a group? Groups usually welcome! Discuss with your volunteer coordinator well ahead of time to be sure your group can be accommodated. Great idea for team building or family outing.

Can I volunteer year-round? Absolutely! Many organizations have all-season opportunities. Dress for the weather and enjoy yourself. Imagine cutting invasive buckthorn and warming by the bonfire with hot cocoa.

Can student service learning hours and court ordered community service hours be earned? Often yes.
