Tribune Letter to the Editor: Vote Yes for Forest Preserves

LWV Chicago Environmental Action Committee Co-Chair Deborah Halpern posted a letter to the editor of the Chicago Tribune that gave reasons why voters should support the Forest Preserves referendum on the November 8 General Election ballot.

“The forest preserves give us all an opportunity to explore nature as well as to protect clean water sources, air quality and wildlife habitats. With tens of millions of trees, the forest preserves clean and cool the air we breathe. These lands absorb as much greenhouse emissions annually as are produced by more than 330,000 cars, according to the Forest Preserve District.

“Forest preserve lands also filter stormwater to keep pollution from entering our waterways and help protect against flooding by absorbing hundreds of millions of gallons of rainwater each year.”
