Municipal Election 2023 Report

Mail-in and provisional ballots are still being counted a week after the Municipal Election on February 28. Following is an overview of the election results as of Monday, March 6. As additional ballots are included in the final vote count, there may be some minor changes of final numbers.

See the Chicago Board of Elections website for a full listing of election results.

Overall Turnout

The turnout for the election was 35.5%. This is similar to turnouts for February Municipal Elections since 2015.

No single candidate for mayor received more than 50% of the total number of ballots cast. Therefore, there will be a runoff election for the entire city on April 4 between the two highest vote getters: Paul Vallas and Brandon Johnson. Vallas received slightly over 184,000 votes (33.0%). Johnson received over 120,000 votes (21.6%). Finishing In third place was Lori Lightfoot with almost 94,000 votes (16.8%).

There was no opposition in the races for city clerk and city treasurer. The incumbents—Anna Valencia and Melissa Conyears-Ervin—were reelected.

Alderpersons

Incumbent alderpersons were reelected in 32 wards.

New alderpersons were elected in four wards: 14, 26, 34, and 44.

There will be runoff elections for alderpersons in 14 wards. Four of these races include incumbents: 1*, 4, 5, 6, 10, 11*, 21, 24, 30, 36*, 43, 45*, 46, and 48 (*indicates that the incumbent is in the runoff).

See our summary of aldermanic races.
