Plastic-Free July Event Recap

Microplastics in Our Bodies: What’s in Our Water and Why Does It Matter?

On Thursday, July 14, LWV Chicago co-sponsored and co-produced Chicago CPR’s (Coalition for Plastic Reduction) inaugural event, “Microplastics in Our Bodies: What’s in Our Water and Why Does it Matter.” Watch the event now.

The informative event was held at The Plant, a former meatpacking plant in Chicago's Back of the Yards neighborhood that has been repurposed into a closed loop vertical farm and sustainable food business incubator.

The 70+ attendees were treated to a panel of experts who discussed the science behind the impacts of plastics on the environment and our bodies while providing useful insight on how we can take action. The panelists were Andrea Densham of the Shedd Aquarium, John W. Scott of the Illinois Sustainable Technology Center, and Iyana Simba of the Illinois Environmental Council. Dean Alonistiotis of Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago moderated.

The lively discussion continued downstairs over pizza and Chicago Green Drinks at the Whiner Tap Room.

A recording of the event will be available on our webpage soon.

To learn more about microplastics, or to join other environmental projects, attend the Environmental Action Committee’s next meeting on August 15 at 4 pm. Email environment@lwvchicago.org for the Zoom link!
