LWV Chicago is once again partnering with the Gene Siskel Film Center to present our second Democracy at Risk film festival, featuring two prescient political films that delve into the challenges facing democracy today.
ACE IN THE HOLE (1951): Kirk Douglas delivers one of his greatest performances as a disgraced reporter who seizes on a deadly rescue operation to revive his career. Billy Wilder's blistering satire of journalism, ambition, and public spectacle remains a chillingly prescient portrait of media ethics and manipulation.
MEDIUM COOL (1969): Set against the backdrop of the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago, MEDIUM COOL follows a television news cameraman caught between observing history and becoming part of it. Shot amid the real protests and police clashes, the film remains a startling meditation on media, power, and democracy.
