LWVUS at the 2021 Climate Conference

LWVUS will attend the United Nations Climate Conference (COP26) in Glasgow, Scotland from October 31 through November 12. Eleven local league members are excited to be representing the League.

On November 5, the League is co-sponsoring an event with McGill University and Human Rights Watch entitled “Disability-Inclusive Climate Action: Challenges, Opportunities & Pathways.” The event will review the role of disability rights in making climate mitigation and adaptation policies more effective, accessible, and equitable.

LWVUS joined a statement to COP26 Glasgow calling for the worldwide scientific community to coordinate research and innovation to reduce carbon emissions and achieve the goals of the 2015 Paris Agreement; focus adaptation on planning, land use, settlements and infrastructure, as well as forestry and agriculture; participate and coordinate activities so marginalized populations do not bear the brunt of the climate crisis and mitigation strategies.

The statement concludes: “The challenges posed by climate change are global and cannot be successfully met by countries or regions in isolation, and even less by competition between nations. Cooperation and transparency are critical and indispensable to solving climate change.”
